... The Kankakee City Fire Department...
presently consists of 57 firefighters and officers who respond out of four fire stations each manned 24 hours, 7 days per week, with five pieces of front line apparatus - three engines, one ladder truck and one Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance. The Fire Department is responsible for fire protection and emergency ambulance service within the City of Kankakee.
The department has 50 personnel working a 52.5-hour weekly shift (24 hours on-48 hours off) with 5 officers and 2 firefighters working a 40-hour week day shift. There is a Chief, 2 Assistant Chiefs, 5 Captains, 9 Lieutenants and 40 firefighters. 38 members are paramedics, 12 are certified fire investigators and 6 are certified arson investigators. We are supported by two full-time administrative assistants.
The department is separated into the Supervision, Training, Alarm & Communications, Fire Prevention, Firefighting Force, Emergency Services, Other Fire, and Fire Building Divisions. This allows the department to better focus its efforts on the respective specialized areas of need, to create more efficient operations, and to more effectively meet the demands of the City's residential and business communities.
The area protected under these divisions constitutes approximately 22 square miles and includes 10,000 housing units, three hospitals, three nursing homes, three chemical plants, and dozens of small businesses. The department protects Interstate 57 from milepost 307 to 313, the Kankakee River within the city limits, and covers 2 rail lines which pass through the heart of the city.
In addition to the standard reactive services that the department provides, the department emphasizes proactive efforts in Fire Prevention and Investigation, Building Code Enforcement, Public Fire Education, Preplanning, and the thorough training of its personnel. The department's proactive endeavors help assure a safer community and ensure that skilled personnel are available to respond to emergency situations as they arise.
